Programming Assistant

June 2016 • Albany, NY

What I liked

This summer was my second summer I spent at the university as a programming assistant. I worked with the UAlbany Programming Board along with Orientation in welcoming incoming freshman. Through a series of presentations, I presented to them just a few of the many opportunities available on campus to become an involved Great Dane.

What I wish was different

Since it was the summer, I would of liked if summer staff was taken outside of the university on a small trip somewhere around the area. It could of been a great way to bond with those who stayed working at the university this summer and helping welcoming incoming freshman.

Advice

It definitely allows you to build your network as not many students are on campus and your hard work does not go unnoticed. Faculty and staff are always very appreciative of the work you do because it is of great help to them to have the extra hands throughout the summer and I would advice any student looking to build connections to spend a summer working on campus.

Undergraduate Research Assistant

June - July 2018 • Albany, NY

What I liked

I liked that it was familiar but at the same time something new, for me. I learned more about Python as a coding language, and had a few kids under my guidance who I was able to help in their research.

What I wish was different

It was an amazing experience, but I didn't have an intensive study of the course, or maybe it wasn't for a long period of time. So I would have loved it if I had gotten more time and resources to get deeper into the research.

Advice

I think as a piece of advice I'd say that working hard is not enough, a person needs to work smart. Working smart combines important skills like working hard, having discipline, integrity, the urge to gain knowledge and being creative and open to a new ideas.

Orientation Leader

June - August 2018 • Albany, NY

What I liked

I loved getting to meet incoming freshmen and offer my advice and input on tips and tricks to be successful in college. I also loved that I got to grow as an individual and better my public speaking skills and got to network a lot with UAlbany Staff and Faculty members.

What I wish was different

Nothing at all, I loved the way the program was run and the amazing staff we had.

Advice

Always bring your smile and energy into what you are doing because it could be your hundredth time doing this but it is their first time being here so your first impression and the energy you give off can make a big difference as to how comfortable and excited they might be about attending the institution.
